Dusty goldenrod

The dusty goldenrod is a flowering plant of the genus Solidaq/Pubera.

The only known location for the plant in Ohio is in Highland Heights. This location is part of approximately 3.93 acres of land that is a palustrine meadow containing an unusual diversity of vascular plants (400+), which are rare and/endangered in Ohio or Cuyahoga County.

The palustrine meadow with the dusty goldenrod is part of an area of land that is environmentally sensitive. The land is a mix of wooded swamp, wet meadow, and wet forest and contains several streams that are the headwaters of the East Branch of the Euclid Creek.

Good Friday, gratitude

Instead of listing out the things for which I am grateful, I'll try a narrative today. I still want to place at the top of my list gratitude to God and all who help me get through a day. Of course, I don't know Terry Gross personally, but I feel like I do. I am grateful for her show.

For Good Friday, Terry's show was about Jesus and Crucifixion, a Historical View. John Crossan was the guest. He is a Christian scholar and former priest. He discussed the historical Jesus, the role of cricifixion in history (it is a way to show people in a graphic way what they are doing is wrong), and the beginnings of Christianity.

Crossan is a founding member of the Jesus Seminar, a group of scholars who meet to determine the authenticity of Jesus' sayings in the Gospels. He is author of over a dozen books on Christianity. A native of Ireland, Crossan was ordained as a priest and left the priesthood in 1969. The broadcast with Terry originally aired in 2004.

Terry has a way of bringing to me interesting and thought-provoking discussion of issues about faith and spirituality. She does this often.

I'm not sure how to tie this together, but what is coming to my mind is that in the news now is discussion of what goes on in churches such as the one where Reverand Wright made the statement about what is in the Bible about countries that should be punished for their evil deeds. This is the United Church of Christ where Barak Obama is a member. Barak was able to address his feelings about these statements in a speech that many people found inspiring, which often happens with Obama's speeches. I would like to be one of the ones who is not a cynic, hoping that America can, as Obama says is possible, overcome hateful stereotyping and heal wounds of the past and focus on how to solve problems.

CSU calendar

I have been using my blog space to hold information and move toward a gratitude blog. Maybe I should do more traditional blogging.

1. Grateful to God and all who help me get through a day
2. Grateful to CSU

Looks like if someone attends CSU and graduates after a summer term, possible requirement completion dates could be June 27, July 11, or August 8, depending on which summer term. We will have to see how Barb's summer schedule works out. This is so exciting. Rhino, here we come!

Grat, eggs, air

3. Good recipes for Easter eggs (also known as hard boiled eggs)

Wikipedia say that some cooks (for example, Julia Child, Alton Brown, and Martha Stewart) recommend turning off the heat as soon as the water comes to a boil leaving the tightly-covered eggs to sit for 15 minutes, after which the eggs are removed from the hot water and placed in an ice bath. Many cooks, however, prefer to exercise more direct control over the process. A typical recipe:

* place eggs within a little pot
* add water until the eggs are submerged to a depth of 1 inch
* heat to a boil
* reduce heat, maintaining boil for 3-11 minutes, depending on the desired level of yolk firmness.

If the cook cools the hot eggs rapidly by running cold water over them, the egg will shrink slightly inside the shell, making it easier to remove. It also avoids a grey ring that usually forms around the yolk when sliced.

An easy way to remove the shell is to crack the entire shell and then pierce the membrane on the inside. The shell can then be removed, as the membrane holds the shell together.

Grat, petition

1. Thank you to God and all who help me get through a day
2. Thanks that people care about a clean environment and preserving nature
3. John Grisham's new book is about a company that polluted drinking water and caused a cancer cell in the nearby city

In November, 2007, residents on Hawthorne and Kennelwood learned that Bass Energy of Akron, Ohio intended within the week to begin clear cutting the wooded area behind Hawthorne, to install one of two gas wells in the park.

The other well was to be placed behind Kennelwood, adjacent to the new parking lot.

Half of the proposed well field for the Kennelwood site was on “ODNR” (Ohio Dept. Natural Resources) land that was purchased with state money and that is constitutionally prohibited from being used for anything other than undeveloped green space. That well site is also in a wetlands areas.

The city required Bass Energy to appear at a planning and zoning commission meeting to complete the final details of their planned drilling efforts. At that meeting, a Bass representative stated that Bass believed that it did not have to deal with the city or obey any city regulations because they had received drilling permits from the state, and as far as they were concerned, the state had completely preempted any local control or local law.

At the next city council meeting, several residents spoke and Frank Skala presented a petition, signed by 100 residents, asking council to slow down the process.

LOGs members engaged in a letter writing campaign to the Sun Messenger and attended council meetings. Council’s first decision was to create a committee to examine the placement of the gas wells, but ultimately council directed the law director to rescind the lease with Bass energy and also rescinded the resolution authorizing the mayor to enter into the lease.

charter ammendment deadlines

We are aiming for early/mid July.

Council has a maximum of 120 days to put it on the ballot, and the law requires them to call a special election (which costs $$), if there is no regularly scheduled election set within that 120 day time period.

We don't want to put taxpayers to the expense of a special election, so we're planning to time our formal presentation of the petitions to coincide with the regularly scheduled November election. On the other hand, we don't want them to have a reason that they didn't have enough time to check the signatures.

120 days from the November election puts us at about mid July.

Grat, yoga

1. Grateful to God and all who help me in a positive and enjoyable way get through a day
2. Yoga and stimulating acupressure points on earlobe

http://www.aarpmagazine.org/health/your_brain_on_exercise.html

I have been trying this yoga move which is supposed to boost brain function by stimulating acupressure points on the earlobes. I understand that I can use a chair as a safety precaution, but so far have done it without the chair.

1. Place your left hand on your right earlobe, thumb on the front of the lobe with fingernail facing outward and second finger behind the earlobe.

2. Do the same with the right hand on the left earlobe, making sure the left arm is closer to your chest and inside your right (this is supposed to help energy travel upward to the brain).

3. Press both earlobes simultaneously.

4. As you press on the earlobes, squat down, keeping your back straight.

5. Do 10 to 12 deep bends, inhaling through the nose on the way down and exhaling through the mouth coming up.
